Exporting an SVG from LightBurn

Moving a design out of LightBurn — to a customer, another machine or another program — starts with one menu. Here is what it exports and what it does not.

The export in three steps

Select what you want to export — or nothing, to export the whole project. Choose File > Export, or press Alt+X (Option+X on a Mac). Pick SVG as the file type and save. LightBurn's documentation lists SVG, DXF and AI as the vector formats that are always available.

  • Select the parts, or nothing for everything
  • File > Export or Alt/Option+X
  • Choose SVG and save
02

What the export leaves out

An exported SVG is geometry, not a LightBurn job: speed, power and other cut settings are not saved in it. Layers whose output is switched off are still included, but hidden. Raster images exported on their own come out without LightBurn's image adjustments; if you need the processed picture, LightBurn's Save Processed Bitmap command saves that version.

  • No cut settings in the file
  • Layers with output off: included, hidden
  • Processed image: Save Processed Bitmap

Exporting images

When exactly one image is selected, the export also offers PNG, JPG and BMP. Use this to pass a picture on unchanged. If the image was dithered in LightBurn and you want to keep the dot pattern, save the processed bitmap instead, and remember that a dithered image belongs at the DPI it was made for.

  • PNG, JPG, BMP with one image selected
  • Processed version via Save Processed Bitmap
  • Keep the original DPI for dithered images

Where the SVG can go next

An SVG from LightBurn opens in design programs, in other laser software and in Vextrify, where it can be placed in a layout, used as a relief shape with a bevel, or sent to a GRBL or Ruida laser from the desktop app. Check the scale after import: SVG files carry their size, but some programs interpret units differently.

  • Opens in most design and laser programs
  • In Vextrify: layout, relief shape, laser
  • Check the size after import

Common questions

How do I export an SVG from LightBurn?

Select the parts you want, or nothing for the whole project, then choose File > Export (Alt+X, Option+X on Mac) and save as SVG.

Does the LightBurn SVG export include my speed and power settings?

No. The export saves the geometry, not the cut settings. Keep the LightBurn project file for that.

How do I export a processed image from LightBurn?

Use Save Processed Bitmap. The normal image export saves the picture without LightBurn's image adjustments.
