Export laser files for LightBurn, EZCAD and SVG

A hand-over goes wrong when the file and its DPI drift apart. Here is what leaves Vextrify and how to place it.

What leaves Vextrify

Photos leave as a PNG at the DPI and output size you chose in Photo Studio. Artwork leaves as SVG outlines, produced by Vectorize or Contour. Vextrify exports files for LightBurn, EZCAD or Ruida. It does not say more about specific native project formats than that.

  • PNG for photos, at the chosen DPI and size
  • SVG for artwork, from Vectorize and Contour
  • Exports files for LightBurn, EZCAD or Ruida

Placing a PNG in LightBurn

LightBurn's image modes include Threshold, Ordered, Atkinson, Dither, Stucki, Jarvis, Newsprint, Halftone, Sketch, Grayscale, 3D Slice and Pass-Through. Pass-Through sends a pre-processed image without re-dithering it, so it is the mode for a PNG you already dithered. Pre-dithered images must be engraved at the same DPI they were made for, otherwise the dots get resampled.

  • Pass-Through for an already-dithered PNG
  • Engrave at the DPI the file was made for
  • Other modes only for an undithered file

Outlines and logos as SVG

Vectorize and Contour turn artwork into SVG outlines. These are for logos, shapes and cut lines rather than photos. They open in vector-capable laser software, which then assigns your own layer settings.

  • Vectorize: artwork to SVG outlines
  • Contour: SVG outlines around a subject

Keep the settings out of the file

Speed, power and spacing belong to your machine and material, not to the exported file. Find them with a material test grid on scrap. To export many photos the same way, Batch applies a saved recipe and returns one ZIP. A free account is needed to load and process images.

  • Settings come from your test grid
  • Batch: one recipe, one ZIP

Keep files traceable

A job usually involves more than one file: a PNG for the photo, an SVG for the outline, and a note of the material and size. Name them so they stay together, with the order or item, the material and the size in the name. When you re-engrave a repeat order, the same names let you find the exact file you used, and the DPI it was made for. Photo Studio exports at the DPI and size you choose, so record them with the file.

  • Order, material and size in the file name
  • Keep the photo and outline together
  • Record the DPI with the file

Common questions

What file types does Vextrify export?

PNG for photos, at the chosen DPI and size, and SVG outlines from Vectorize and Contour. It exports files for LightBurn, EZCAD or Ruida.

How do I avoid dithering twice?

In LightBurn, set the image to Pass-Through for a PNG you already dithered, and engrave at the DPI the file was made for.

Does Vextrify also run the laser?

In the desktop app, yes, for GRBL diode lasers and Ruida CO2 lasers. For fiber and galvo lasers it exports files that you run in LightBurn or EZCAD.
