MeerK40t vs LaserGRBL

Two free programs, two very different jobs. The deciding questions are which laser you have and which computer sits next to it.

The short answer

Pick LaserGRBL if you have a diode laser with a GRBL controller and a Windows PC: it is quick to learn and does the job. Pick MeerK40t if you have a stock K40 with an M2 Nano board, a Mac or Linux computer, or several controller types in one shop. MeerK40t can do more, but it asks more of you, and its maintainers say the project is in maintenance mode, so fixes arrive slowly.

  • Diode + Windows → LaserGRBL
  • Stock K40, Mac or Linux → MeerK40t
  • MeerK40t: more capable, more technical

Which lasers each one drives

LaserGRBL speaks GRBL only, which covers most hobby diode lasers — xTool D-series, Ortur, Atomstack, Sculpfun and similar. MeerK40t lists drivers for Lihuiyu M2 and M3 Nano boards (the stock K40), any GRBL device, Ruida controllers, EZCAD2-compatible galvo lasers, Moshiboard and NewlyDraw machines. It can also emulate a Ruida controller, so LightBurn can drive a stock K40 through it.

  • LaserGRBL: GRBL diode lasers
  • MeerK40t: K40, GRBL, Ruida, EZCAD2 galvo and more
  • MeerK40t can emulate Ruida for LightBurn

Operating systems and project status

LaserGRBL runs on Windows only, which rules it out on a Mac without a virtual machine. MeerK40t runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, including a Raspberry Pi. Both are free and open source, but they differ in momentum: MeerK40t's maintainers state that it is in a low-maintenance phase and rely on community contributions, which matters if you depend on quick bug fixes.

  • LaserGRBL: Windows only
  • MeerK40t: Windows, macOS, Linux
  • MeerK40t: maintenance mode, community-driven fixes

When a third option makes more sense

Neither program focuses on photo preparation, and neither offers a signed Mac app with a supported CO2 path. If you engrave a lot of photos, run a Ruida CO2 laser from a Mac, or want camera placement on the workpiece, look at Rayforge (free, open source, camera alignment) or Vextrify (paid machine control, free browser tier for preparation, photo and relief tools built in).

  • Lots of photo work → a tool with real photo prep
  • Ruida CO2 from a Mac → supported path needed
  • Camera placement → Rayforge or Vextrify

Common questions

Is MeerK40t better than LaserGRBL?

It depends on the laser. MeerK40t supports more controllers and operating systems; LaserGRBL is simpler for a GRBL diode laser on Windows.

Does LaserGRBL work with a K40?

Not with the stock M2 Nano board. LaserGRBL only speaks GRBL; a stock K40 needs K40 Whisperer or MeerK40t.

Does MeerK40t run on a Mac?

Yes. MeerK40t runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Is MeerK40t still maintained?

Its maintainers describe it as being in maintenance mode: releases continue, but development and responses are slower and rely on community contributions.
