Bad phone photos for laser engraving

Customers send what they have. Sort the file into fixable and not fixable before you spend material.

Triage first

Look at the photo at full size and sort it. Small, dark or cluttered photos are usually fixable. A photo that is badly out of focus is not, because no tool can restore detail that was never captured. Asking the customer for a better file is faster than fighting one.

  • Fixable: small, dark, busy background
  • Not fixable: badly out of focus
  • Ask for another photo when needed

Small and soft photos

Photo Upgrade enlarges a small photo. Its Standard setting runs on the device. Enhance Pro runs on Vextrify's server and is meant for very soft photos. Both can give a cleaner file to work from, but a very soft source stays limited, so check the face at full size afterwards.

  • Standard: runs on the device
  • Enhance Pro: Vextrify's server, very soft photos
  • Check the result at full size

Dark photos and busy backgrounds

Phone photos taken indoors often have closed shadows that turn into solid patches on the material. Lift them in the live preview. A cluttered background can be removed with the background remover, and Cut Pro handles hair and difficult edges.

  • Open the shadows in the preview
  • Remove a cluttered background

Do it the same way every time

When many customers send similar photos, save the steps as a recipe and let Batch apply it to many photos, returning one ZIP. Test the result on scrap, because settings depend on your machine and material. A free account is needed to load and process images.

  • Recipes keep the result consistent
  • Batch returns one ZIP
  • Test on scrap

What to ask the customer for

Many bad photos can be avoided with one short message to the customer. Ask for the original file rather than a screenshot or a chat copy, since messaging apps compress images. Ask for daylight and a sharp face, and for the subject filling the frame. A photo that meets that is far easier to prepare. Keep the message short, and keep the unprocessed original in case you need to start again.

  • Ask for the original, not a chat copy
  • Daylight, sharp face, subject fills the frame
  • Keep the unprocessed original

Common questions

Can a blurry phone photo be fixed?

A little softness can be improved, but a photo that is badly out of focus cannot be restored. Ask the customer for another photo.

Does Photo Upgrade run on my device?

The Standard setting runs on the device. Enhance Pro, for very soft photos, runs on Vextrify's server.

Why is my phone photo too dark when engraved?

Indoor shadows are often closed. Lift them in the preview. See the too-dark guide for the other causes.
