Laser material test grid generator

Find the right settings for a new material by engraving a grid where one setting changes by row and another by column. You choose the settings and the ranges; the file labels every square.

Set up your grid

Pick the two settings you want to compare and type the range for each. The grid fills in the steps between your first and last value.

Turn the colours into layers

The SVG uses three colours, and most laser software turns each colour into its own layer on import. Every square on the grid needs the same engrave type, but a different value for the settings you chose to vary.

Blue squares
Engrave fill. Give each square its own layer in your software and set it to the row and column values printed under it.
Red frame
Cut line around the grid. Optional: set it to a cut layer, or turn the layer off if you only want to engrave.
Green text
Labels with the value pair for each square. Mark it with a light engrave or hide that layer.

The file is sized in millimetres. If the text imports as editable text, convert it to outlines in your software before cutting. This page never suggests values for any material: test on an offcut and trust what you see.

Skip the file shuffling in the desktop app

In the Vextrify desktop app, Material Test builds this kind of grid for you: every square becomes its own layer with exactly the values in its label, and you start from your own active layer settings. You can frame it first, then run it straight on your laser. The desktop app is free to try for 24 hours.
