The most common free LightBurn alternative is LaserGRBL, but it only runs on Windows and only controls GRBL diode lasers. MeerK40t is free and open-source, good for K40 CO2 lasers, but more technical. Vextrify is free to start in the browser, runs on macOS as well as Windows, and lets you prepare photos, logos and layouts at no cost — with paid plans when you want live multi-laser control. If you are on a Mac, Vextrify is usually the only genuinely free way to begin.

LaserGRBL — free but Windows-only
LaserGRBL is the go-to free controller for GRBL diode lasers, and it is genuinely capable for that job. But it is Windows-only, so it will not help Mac users at all, and it does not support CO2/Ruida or fiber machines. Its image preparation is basic, so photo engraving usually needs another tool first.
